As a boy I used to sit in church and
stare, mesmerized, at the stained-glass
"shape" at the front of the sanctuary.
I say "shape" because it looked somewhat
like a steeple (there was one outside), only
it wasn't, it was just an inadvertent obelisk
in stained glass, all alternating discs of
purple and blue, with small fiery sparks
of red shot throughout. There seemed
to be some wisdom in the glass, some
hidden knowledge, and staring at it,
the eyes seemed to pull apart from the
mind, or some illusion birthed,
similar to the "magic eye" posters, or
3D glasses, the blue discs falling back into the
glass, and the purple swimming forward, but
out front were those sparks of red glass,
and then something would shift my
attention, and the red would dive backward,
the purples would flatten out, and the
blues would come streaking forward.
I stared at that stained glass shape
for years, never quite able to fathom
what it was trying to tell me.
I'm still trying to figure it out.
